Each tried to position himself in the Monday night debate on New Jersey Network as a champion of less government spending.
State Sen. Joseph Pennacchio called himself ``an average Joe, a Jersey Joe,'' while Murray Sabrin, a business professor at Ramapo College, characterized himself as ``Maverick Murray.''
Former Congressman Dick Zimmer said he's ``the only one with a proven record as leader for fiscal responsibility.''
The winner of the June 3 primary will face incumbent Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg, Rep. Rob Andrews or Morristown Mayor Donald Cresitello in the November election.
The Democrats will debate on May 29 on New Jersey 101.5 FM and on May 30 on NJN.
